Welcome!
Tom Bass Sculpture Studio School is the oldest and largest independent Sculpture School in Australia.
Founded by Tom Bass in 1974, the sculpture school continues to provide high quality teaching to students with a range of backgrounds and interests in sculpture; practising sculptors, young and emerging artists, teachers and architects,as well as people in retirement and those wishing to explore sculpture for the first time. The mix of our students’ backgrounds creates a rich experience in an adult learning environment. Our Summer and Winter school short courses offer scope for the developed artist to explore other sculpture media, and be taught by a master, as well as workshops for beginners. The Life Study is an in depth exploration of the figure, studying its rhythms, and expression. It attracts serious students of sculpture including those from tertiary art institutions.
An extension of the Sculpture School is the Studio Commissioning Program, supporting students to become practising sculptors and clients to commission sculpture.
The Friends program includes studio and gallery tours and opens the experience of learning about sculpture to the broader public. These give a wealth of insight, through studio and gallery visits, into the practices of many Sydney sculptors.
In 2003 the Tom Bass Sculpture Studio School became an Incorporated not-for-profit association. It is now managed by a Board. The School, listed on the Register of Cultural Organisations and a Charity registered with the ATO, is able to receive support from donors and patrons, partners and sponsors for its work in the Promotion of Sculpture. We have a large focus on the provision of scholarships for young artists and through a disability art access program. The Board has developed a Corporate Statement which captures our aspirations, values and goals.
