Workshop Visit; Casting day

TBSSS Friends Event:
Jennifer Turpin Studio visit

Saturday 13 February 3pm- 4.30pm

Join us in a visit to Jennifer Turpin's studio, whose career started at the TBSSS when we were at Broadway!

With a career spanning twenty-five years, join us for this fascinating insight into the work of Jennifer Turpin. Her sculpture and installation art has brought her acclaim and controversy. The use of water and kinetic elements in her solo and collaborative projects has created a body of work that has a dynamic and harmonious impact upon the Australian landscape.

Winner of 2003 Lloyd Rees Civic Award, RAIA for her collaborative work ‘Storm Waters’ (2000/02 with Michaelie Crawford), Turpin was unexpectedly thrown into the media spotlight in August 2003 when the monumental sculpture ‘Fan’ (concept & design commissioned by National Planning Authority, Canberra) was embroiled in a conservative political backlash that eventually ended the project. To this day, 'Fan' remains a cautionary tale of the power to determine the 'public' in public art.

Within Goodwin’s extensive list of sculpture and installation projects he has explored the impact of the body and its disconnected relationship between technology and our urban landscape. His work represents the sculptural intersection of the natural and the artificial object and questions where the body stops and architecture or technology begins. Using the life model as a guide for drawings and the construction of maquettes, Goodwin will guide participants through the exploration of the point at which the body ends and architecture begins and how the space is affected by the continuous ‘wiggle’.

NB. Participants are advised that the artwork may not be fully completed within the Master Class session but are invited to enrol in a regular workshop program to complete it within the School term.

Drawing for Sculpture with John Atkin – Master Class
Monday 1 November 2004

Visiting Sculpture by the Sea International artist John will take a drawing workshop from the figure over a period of three days, looking at a range of drawing techniques (line, wash, mixed media, decoupage, etc.) and approaches to exploring volume, weight, mass, balance & line in the human figure within a life room setting. These drawings would then be developed into planar constructions, (not more than 18 inches tall) and again worked from the figure as well as the drawings. These "figure" sculptures, though not representational, explore the spatial relationships inherent in the human form and link to John’s methodologies of teaching drawing.

On Sunday 31 October John Atkin will present a talk about his work - this is a free event.

The Art of Letter Cutting in Stone - Workshop
Friday 24 September - Saturday 25 September 2004

A workshop in the tradition of Eric Gill with Jamie Sargeant. Jamie started lettering about 25 years ago as a monumental mason in the UK. When he picked up a copy of 'Letters Slate Cut' that David Kindersley had just published he approached Kindersley and moved to Cambridge where he was his assistant for 5 years. David Kindersley had been Eric Gill's last assistant and was Jamie’s guide to the world of direct stone carving that Gill revived. After this Jamie worked with Rattee and Kett who ran the only commercial stone/wood-carving workshop in the UK. The carving team formed 'The Carving Workshop', which won awards for work on the National Gallery and St John's College Chapel in Cambridge. Jamie got commissions for formal inscriptions and started a long and fruitful relationship with 'Memorials by Artists'. The Carving Workshop became involved in monumental public art projects like Victoria Square, Birmingham and the Battle of Britain Memorial at Dover. Eleven years ago Jamie decided to worked alone in Norfolk. During this time he has been cutting letters while building a career as a sculptor and working on commissions. Jamie recently exhibited at the Spirit Level Gallery – it was his first opportunity to show lettering since arriving in Australia 3 years ago.
