Tom Bass>>
Tom Bass' work as a sculptor has been concerned with communities, namely schools,
universities and government and corporate and religious institutions. In the
late forties, Bass developed his philosophy of working as a sculptor in making
totemic forms and emblems, namely work expressing ideas of significance to particular
communities or to society at large. His work is the subject of a major retrospective in 2006 (see tombass.org biographical

Damien Lucas After completing an
electrical apprenticeship, 1996, Damien began his art
studies with David Wilson in Bathurst. From 1997 he
began the study of sculpture with Tom Bass. He worked
with Cliff Axelsen at his Warriewood studio, with Donna
Littlejohn in a major commissioned work. Damien has
been teaching at the school since 2001. He also taught
for 2 years at Catavento in Bowral and is completing
a 3 year degree course at the NAS. Damien completed
his first major work “ Harmony” in 2004
and is working on a major commission “Pioneer
Woman” for
the Stockman’s Hall of Fame at Longreach.
Michael Christie studied Architecture
and worked as a graphic artist. He qualified as a teacher
of art and has a Masters in Art Education (Hon). He
taught for 18 yrs at St Ignatius Riverview College
in a broad range of media with a special interest in
drawing and three dimensional forms. He became a student
with Tom Bass in 1997. He began teaching at the Tom
Bass Sculpture Studio School towards the end of 2000.
Wendy Black was born in South West
England and studied Art at Exeter and at Wimbeldon
Art Schools. For 4 years she worked in the
advertising industry, and then as a freelance Illustrator
for 2 years. In 1987 Wendy and her husband moved to
Australia. Wendy attended life drawing classes at
Paddington Art School and Ku Ring Gai Art Center until
she started ceramic sculpture in 1995. In 1998 she
discovered Tom Bass while he was still at Broadway,
and she has studied with Tom Bass ever since. Wendy
has participated in the teaching program since the
beginning of 2004.
Bernice Lowe studied sculpture at
Tom Bass Sculpture School from 1989 to 1994. With a
background in dance, movement, yoga and tai chi she
brings this understanding into her feeling for sculptural
form; rhythm, movement, gesture and harmony are
energetics that are expressed in her work as a sculptor. In
1995 she took a break from sculpture to complete a
B.H.Sci.Acupuncture. She currently teaches Life Drawing
for Sculpture and assists Tom Bass in teaching Sculpture
Special Workshop Teachers
Paul Hopmeier was born in Sydney: “My
father was a stone mason and I worked as a stone mason.
I started at East Sydney Tech studying sculpture in
1973 and have been making sculpture ever since.” Paul
has taught sculpture for many years in Sydney, including

John Atkin is Reader in Fine Art,
Loughborough University School of Art and Design.
Atkin has exhibited extensively in England, Europe,
Australia and the United States, with upcoming exhibitions
in China and the United Arab Emerits. His work
has also been exhibited and supported by Sculpture
at Goodwood and at the Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venice,
